This essay is focused on the Barrai family, a group of stonecutters operating in Cagliari between 15th and 16th centuries. The family played a leading role in the construction and diffusion of star-shaped rib vaults in the late Sardinian 16th centuries religious architecture. The study attempts to systematize available evidence and information about the Barrai family in order to provide a starting point for further investigation. New hypotheses about the family’s genealogy and activity during the second half of the 16th century are also explored.

The Bondwoman’s Narrative is a novel that functions as a story made up from Hannah Crafts’s experiences as a bondwoman and thus merges fact and fiction giving a thoroughly new account of slavery both committed to reality and fiction. Following and taking over the Gothic literary genre that spread in Europe as a reaction toward the Romantic spirit, Crafts uses it to denounce the degrading slavery system and, mainly, to scathingly attack the patriarchal roots that stigmatize black women as the ultimate victims. [ES] In 1428 the painter Jaume Mateu, who was trained in the workshop of the international Gothic master of Valencia, Pere Nicolau, painted an altarpiece dedicated to San Blas for the jurist Juan Gomez from Villar del Cobo. The parish church of this town still retains some paintings that belong to an old Gothic altarpiece with scenes of San Sebastián, San Fabián, San Jorge and a Crucifixion. This study analyzes the style of the preserved works and places them in the circle of the Valencian painter documented in Villar.

Some Reflections on the Gothic Optative

The verbal systems of the earliest Indo-European languages are not so congruous with one another as the nominal paradigms. The reconstruction of IE is conformably fraught with far greater difficulty, and there is plenty of room for doubt. In this paper a particular morph will be dealt with, which does not go back as such to Indo-European. The proto-language must have possessed the linguistic unit employed in Gothic to form the verbal endings that are discussed here. Traces of this unit are found in other IE languages, as a matter of fact, and Gothic has utilized it in its own way. The issue will be discussed inside what is called the Greco-Aryan model.
